Poseidon at this Site:
Just like the dynamic city and greater metropolitan
region it serves, the Metro Atlanta YMCA is one of the fastest growing
YMCAs in the country. In fact, it is the sixth largest YMCA in the
United States. With an operating budget of $62M, the Metro Atlanta
YMCA provides programs and services to more than 175,000 men, women,
and children in the Atlanta area.
As Atlanta’s rapidly growing population
has become more and more diverse, the challenge of meeting the needs
of the community has grown. Yet the Y’s 10-year strategic
plan creates a vision and empowers volunteers and staff to leverage
the Y’s history of success while building the organization’s
ability to offer relevant, high quality services to the children,
families, and communities of the region.
Underlying the planning and delivery of all
programs and services, the Metro Atlanta Y takes a very proactive
approach to ensuring the safety of all staff, volunteers, and members
who participate in Y programs. And that proactive commitment to
safety led the Metro Atlanta YMCA to investigate Poseidon, the computer-aided
drowning detection system. The decision to install the Poseidon
system in its swimming pools places the Metro Atlanta YMCA at the
forefront of aquatic safety. Using a combination of trained lifeguards
and the Poseidon system, the YMCA is taking advantage of the most
advanced techniques and tools available to ensure the safety of
its swimmers.
A branch of the Metro Atlanta YMCA, the Carl
E. Sanders Family YMCA at Buckhead, is one of the first swimming
pools in the country to install the Poseidon system. The pool at
the Sanders Buckhead YMCA is representative of many of the YMCA’s
pools and was considered a good test site for the Poseidon installations.
Completing
the installation in the first pool allows us to understand construction
issues, educate the aquatics team, and define any procedural changes
for ongoing successful use of this new technology,
said Ed Munster, COO and executive vice president of the Metro Atlanta
YMCA. The system is scheduled for installation in all of the association’s
indoor pools by September 2003, and installation in outdoor pools
will begin in 2004.
We
have a perfect pool safety record, and we are taking another step
to keep it that way,
said Scott Doll, executive director of the Carl E. Sanders Family
YMCA at Buckhead. Poseidon
is not a replacement for certified lifeguards. The system is being
installed to enhance the high level of aquatic safety already enjoyed
by our members.
At the end of 2002, YMCA Services Corporation,
the national YMCA insurance program, endorsed the Poseidon system.
This is
an excellent supplemental lifesaving tool to have available for
lifeguards,
said John Medler, president of YMCA Services Corporation. I
am excited by the leadership of the Metro Atlanta YMCA’s willingness
to consider and invest in this equipment as part of their association.
