Horsham District Council, a midsized rural community
in southeast England, has for some time been planning the community's
major new Leisure and Swimming Complex. Housing a health and fitness
facility, a dedicated gymnastics centre and four separate swimming
areas, the new Pavilions in the Park is designed to meet local community
requirements. But it was a chance glance at the BBC's Tomorrow's
World television program in 2001that gave Horsham District Council
Officers an idea to enhance the centre's plans. Recreation Manager
Steve Hawker explains :
"We saw a program about Poseidon, a computer-aided drowning
detection system that had just been installed in a pool outside
of London, the first in the country. The concept intrigued us, enough
to set up a meeting at the pool to see the system for ourselves."
Opened in December 2002, Pavilions in the Park now hosts an extensive
swimming programme, including 2,300 swimming lessons each week,
in its range of pools. The facility has a 25 meter by eight lane
conventional pool with a moveable floor, a small teaching pool,
a water confidence pool for babies and toddlers, and leisure waters,
an area of water indoors and outdoors for leisure swimming with
bubble beds, moving water, jets and splash areas. At the moment,
Poseidon is installed in the main pool. Horsham District Council,
however, made sure the entire facility has the infrastructure and
cabling ready for all pools to be Poseidon-equipped, thus enabling
expanded installation in the future.
