The Medina Community Recreation Center houses the first recreational swimming pool in the state of Ohio to install the Poseidon system.
 

Poseidon Configuration:

Coverage is provided by a series of overlapping cameras:

• 5 underwater globes with two cameras per globe, covering the deep section of the pool
• 8 overhead cameras, covering the shallow section of the pool

The City of Medina, Ohio lies in the midst of one of the fastest growing counties in the state. To meet the needs of this growing area, the City of Medina and the Medina City Schools joined in a partnership to build and operate the Medina Community Recreation Center.

There are few partnerships like this in the state of Ohio – or even in the U.S. Without the strength of this unique partnership, the Medina Community Recreation Center would never have been feasible. Separately, the two entities were unable to afford a new recreation center, but in cooperation they were able to afford a modern center for recreation and wellness. Today, the Medina Community Recreation Center is the realization of the partnership’s original goals, which were to provide the safest, highest quality, leading-edge recreational center within the county and within the school’s regional athletic conference.

One of the most important features of the recreation center is the aquatics facility. “Recreation is changing, and today it is essential to have an aquatic attraction. Our aquatic facility is our biggest draw; it is vital to the center,” said Kenn Kaminski, Director of Parks & Recreation for the City of Medina. Kaminski reported that when the recreation center’s inaugural class and program schedule was released, the first registrations and the first classes to fill up were for swim lessons. He was also quick to point out that while the aquatic center is the biggest draw, “if people don’t feel safe for themselves and their families in the pool, they aren’t coming back.”

During the planning of the Medina Community Recreation Center, the forward-thinking city and school system partners addressed the issue of aquatic safety and decided that they wanted to install the Poseidon computer-aided drowning detection system. “Again, the partners’ consensus and the strength of the partnership overall was instrumental in presenting the Poseidon system to the city council and convincing them that we had to have it. The city council embraced both the recreation center and Poseidon with open arms,” said Kaminski.

Kaminski advises peers that the recreation industry is changing and requires more proactive thought. “Just because it hasn’t been done in our industry before, don’t hesitate to at least learn about Poseidon. Be proactive. Don’t wait until you wish you already had the system.”
