The
pool is part of a larger project to develop integrated sports facilities
at the university.
The Iffley Road sports facilities are on the site where Sir Roger
Bannister ran the first four-minute mile in 1954.
Oxford University, formed in the latter half of the 11th century,
is the oldest English-speaking university in the world. While its
academic fame has been renowned for hundreds of years, Oxford's
reputation for sports performance began relatively recently with
the first boat race between Oxford and Cambridge in 1829. Today,
sports enthusiasts at Oxford play nearly 80 different games, from
the popular rugby and rowing to the more obscure baseball and American
football. Many of its competitors are Olympic-caliber athletes.
And now the school will have a pool deserving of its rich athletic
heritage.
Jon Roycroft, director of sports at Oxford University, said the
short course 25 meter, eight lane Rosenblatt Pool will soon be completed.
It enables Oxford's swimming and water polo clubs to have their
own training and competition pool for the first time in more that
100 years.
Roycroft says that with such a broad range of swimmers expected
in the pool, the university has definite responsibilities. "We plan
to serve more than 15,000 students, 6,500 staff and the community
at large. We must be absolutely certain the pool is as safe as it
can be." To do that, Roycroft installed the Poseidon system during
pool construction.
